Listen up because this place is goooooood. We finally had the chance to go to Norfork Table and Inn in Southhold. This refurbished restaurant and inn has four rooms that seem to be occupied all of the time. When you taste the food, you realize why.

We arrived slightly early so we sat at the bar and had some yummy drinks. There were three of us and we all enjoyed different cocktails. Not only did they taste good, but they also looked picture perfect.

Once we sat down in the dining room and reviewed the menus, we quickly realized that ordering was going to be tough. We all wanted EVERYTHING on the menu. It took us a little while to decide but, in the end, we each selected an appetizer, main course and dessert.

The salads were delicious. The Assorted Roasted Baby Beet Salad with Goat Cheese was particularly noteworthy. The beets were sweet and tasty (which makes sense because they practically walked to the restaurant from the farm down the street). The Tuna Sashimi was fresh and flavorful.

For entrees, we ordered fish. When the plates arrived, we started fighting like immature children over which one of us made the best selection. Truth is, ALL of them qualified. Despite our very full bellies, and the large size of each dish, we practically licked our plates.

The menu changes regularly, but we had Sea Bass, Tuna and Halibut. Each fish was served over a different vegetable or legume, and the sauces were delectable. With entrees like this, we couldn't resist dessert. We honestly were thinking "How can you top this?"

We played with the idea of getting one sweet dish to share but, when we looked at the menu, no one wanted to share anything!

The most interesting dessert was the Tapioca pudding. The pecan tart and beignets were very good too. In fact (and we can't believe we're admitting this), we had extra beignets so we took a few home. That has to be the first time we've ever taken a dessert in a doggy bag.

Hopefully the photos can provide a window into how good this meal really was. It may seem expensive (about $85 to $95 a head), but it truly is worth it. All we can say is you gotta try it! Oh, and be SURE to make reservations, even if your party is small!

Pub Grub

We haven't forgotten about you. We were just waiting until we found something that deserved mention. For those of you who like pub grub, we think you'll find this post worth the wait.

The Brass Rail, not to be confused with strip clubs of the same name, is located in Locust Valley, Long Island. This hip little Gastro Pub sports a cool and casual atmosphere with good food, good drinks and an attentive wait staff. We've gone back several times, and we always seem to find something else we like.

Some of our favorite dishes include the Oxtail Sloppy Joe, Cajun Seared Shrimp, Stuffed Artichoke, The Gardener, Grilled Bronzino and the Grilled Scottish Salmon.

The nice thing about the food at The Brass Rail is that there is something for everyone, in every size. You can select a small plate, an entree or a side - yay for the Gastro Pub!

So, if you're in Locust Valley and you're looking for some pub grub, The Brass Rail is the place for you.

Mascot Dock

If you're looking for something to do outdoors in the Patchogue/Holbrook area, we've got just the place - Mascot Dock and the adjacent Shorefront Park. This is a great place to sit and enjoy views of the Great South Bay, watch ferries to Fire Island, or just relax on a park bench. Kids will also enjoy watching people crab and fish along the dock!

If you're hungry, eat at Lombardi's on the Bay or the more casual Nancy's Crab Shack. Both places are right in the park area. Nancy's is a take-out type of place serving crab cakes and other seafood treats. We haven't tried Nancy's yet but, judging by the lines, it must be delicious. We did eat at Lombardi's on the Bay and we really enjoyed their VERY generous (and tasty) portions. The Salad with Grilled Salmon, Chicken Caprese Sandwich and Spaghetti with Meatballs were all good.

Oh Captain

There's a new seafood restaurant in town and it's darn good. Not only can you get good food at the Greek Captain Seafood Restaurant in Huntington Station, but you also get a lot of it.

Speaking from experience, our personal favorites from the menu include the Grilled Salmon over Salad for $12.99 (it's HUGE) and the Sauteed Shrimps and Scallops with Vegetables over rice or pasta (complete dinner $11.99). Sources tell us that the Fried Calamari is also delicious (we'll try it next time).

If you're looking for a formal dining experience, or if you like having wine or a cocktail with your meal, this isn't the place for you (we don't think they've got a liquor license). But, if you're looking for tasty food, large portions and quick meals, you must try Greek Captain Seafood Restaurant. You'll thank us and the captain.

IMAC Closes

It is our job to inform our readers about the wonderful places to go and things to see on Long Island. Last year we told you about the IMAC Theater in Huntington (IMAC). This wonderful venue provided Long Islanders (and those from all over) with some truly phenomenal concerts and shows for almost 30 years. There is no question that the IMAC brought musical legends to Long Island, and that the theater itself was a cultural center. That is why we are sad to report that this very special Long Island theater closed permanently this month.

Some of you may already have heard about this, but we felt we needed to post this information not only to inform our readers about the closing, but to let the folks at IMAC know that the theater will be missed. Thank you for sharing your stage with us over the years.

LIV A Little

You should also know that LIV Vodka was compared to Grey Goose and Chopin in a 2008 blind taste test conducted by LI Business News, and it passed with flying colors. Scoring an 85, LIV got some Strong Island points for its texture, smoothness, aroma and finish. We've had it alone and in mixed drinks and agree that the stuff is good (and we're not just saying that because we like supporting our local businesses). Do yourself a favor and, the next time you head out to Long Island's wine country, try some of Long Island's Vodka too.

Buffalo Roam...on Long Island

Spring is really here and we've already taken several rides out to Long Island's North Fork looking for interesting places to see and things to do so that we can keep sharing this information with you!

You'll never believe what we discovered on our last trip - buffalo! That's right folks. Buffalo roam on Long Island!

Don't let anyone tell you that the only way to see buffalo is to go to Yellowstone National Park (although we have to admit, Yellowstone is pretty cool and you should definitely go if you get the chance)! That said, seeing buffalo right here on Long Island is definitely a unique experience.

To locate the buffalo, head to Roanoke Avenue. As you're driving on Roanoke, you will come to a sign for a farm. Turn here. From the road, through the fence, you can watch the animals grazing. We were lucky enough to observe some babies last weekend - so cute!

Get Oriented at Orient Beach State Park

Many of you may not be brave enough to hit the beach in Orient Point in the winter, but for those of you who like the outdoors and don't mind the cold (or the fact that the snack bar is closed this time of year), this eastern-most point on the North Fork of Long Island is beautiful all year around.

According to our friends at WikipediA, this park was designated a National Natural Landmark in April, 1980. It's home to a rare forest containing red cedar black-jack oak trees and prickly-pear cactus. You can walk along the wood deck that overlooks Gardiner's Bay and take in the beautiful views. On a clear day you might see Gardiner's Island and the Montauk Peninsula in the distance (we did).

We had a great time collecting shells, listening to the waves and watching the birds.

Whether you head to Orient Beach State Park in the winter or summer, we're sure you'll like what you see.

We like the snow in the winter, and we certainly have been getting a lot of it this year! One thing is for sure though, Long Island looks lovely covered in white. Snow shouldn't deter you from heading east. In fact, this is a great time of year to enjoy Long Island's East End - you'll have the place all to yourselves (no annoying crowds folks).

Our suggestion this week - Greenport.

Once a whaling and ship building village, Greenport is a lovely place to spend the day or the weekend. You'll enjoy just walking around and visiting the quaint shops and eateries including the Greenport Tea Company, Verbena and other shops.

Also stroll along the waterfront where you'll see a large bronze sculpture of an Osprey by Roberto Julio Bessin. It commemorates the Americans who lost their lives during the September 11th attack in 2001.

You'll see, the ground doesn't have to be green to enjoy the North Fork town of Greenport.

O Christmas Tree

Eleven days until Christmas! Have you put up your Christmas tree yet? This year, we decided to go straight to the local farm (figured it was a little more eco-friendly since the trees are grown right here on Long Island)!

Our tree came from Shamrock Christmas Tree Farm, in Mattituck, but there are several farms as you head out east. We think our Christmas tree is the best ever, but we might be a little biased.

At Shamrock, kids can ride the train around the farm, visit Santa (on the weekends) and have hot chocolate and popcorn.

The trip can be fun for parents too. There are lots of little towns and hamlets you can visit while you're on the North Fork. If you start your day early enough you might even think about stopping at some of the wineries before you get to the farm. Oh, and don't forget to go over to Briermere for a pie on the way home (what's better than starting your day with wine and ending it with pie?).

Robke's Country Inn

Ok people, we all know times are tough and everyone is looking for a deal, right? Well, we found a place that will satisfy your hunger and your wallet. Robke's Country Inn, located in Fort Salonga, has $10.00 lunches (and, we might add, these are lunches that seem like dinners)!

We went recently for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and were quite excited about our discovery. The portions are HUGE and TASTY. Most of the food is Italian and has been ever since the place was sold by a German to an Italian from the Bronx in 1978.

We'd suggest the Egglplant Rollatini or one of the pasta dishes, but everything looked delish.

Pickle Festival

Every year there is a pickle festival at Smith-Gardner Farm in Greenlawn. We finally got the chance to go! It's a great festival for kids because they enjoy seeing the old farmhouse, riding on the hay truck and participating in the face and body painting. And, of course, the pickles are delicious. We bought a container of dill pickles and a container of spicy ones. We recommend both.

Don't despair if you missed the festival this year. You can still purchase the pickles at the Huntington Farmer's Market, which takes place on Sunday mornings from 7 - 10 am until Thanksgiving.

If you're more into historic places than pickles, visit Smith Gardiner Farm, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and maintained by the Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association. For hours and tour information contact the Association at 631-754-1180.

West Neck Beach

After a day of rain and wind on Saturday, we were itching to get out of the house. Luckily, Sunday was gorgeous and we headed to Caumsett State Park, and then to West Neck Beach.

Like most North Shore beaches, West Neck has its share of rocks and shells along the shoreline, but we like this beach for swimming, paddle surfing and kayaking. West Neck beach is not as protected as some other North Shore beaches because it opens directly into the sound. This makes for a few more waves (definitely not like the South Shore but perfect for getting some exercise).

The surrounding area is also great for walking, biking or running. Directly outside of West Neck Beach there is a walking path that goes along the causway that leads to Caumsett. The walk provides great views of beautiful birds on both sides (like Egrets and Osprey) as well as nice views of the water. On sunny days folks are almost always fishing on the rocks.

A walk on the causway, along the beach or in Caumsett State Park is a great activity for any time of the year but, at least for now, we're holding on to summer as long as we can.

Blue Point Brewing Company

We celebrated the end of the summer with a little brew ha ha at Long Island's only microbrewery in Patchogue. The ten year old Blue Point Brewing Company, owned by Mark Buford and Peter Cotter, has a great selection of good brews available for tasting and purchasing. After spending some time in the tasting room, we left with a jug of Toasted Lager and a jug of Oatmeal Stout (and we'd highly recommend both). Copper in color with hints of caramel, malts and hops, the Toasted Lager is a World Beer Cup Winner and Blue Point's signature beer.

Don't take our word for it though, taste the microbrews for yourselves. Blue Point's free tasting room is open Thursdays and Fridays from 3pm to 7pm and Saturdays from 12pm to 7pm. Tours are also available.

Sculptures by the River

Next time you're in Riverhead visiting Atlantis Marine World or the East End Arts Council, stop at the Peconic Bay Riverwalk. To get there, you'll have to go back to Main Street and head toward the bay.

Although the Peconic can be seen directly behind Atlantis, the Riverwalk extends beyond the aquarium fence. That is why you'll need to walk a little further to fully enjoy the area.

The walk is both relaxing and mysterious. There are approximately eight (maybe more) carved, wooden sculptures, which can be seen along the dock. Nobody seems to know who made the carvings, but they definitely make for some interesting conversation with the locals.

Coffee Break

If you like little secrets then you might like Tillie's Eatery. Located in one of the alleys off of Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor, this hidden coffee shop is a good place for a break on a sunny day. Sit under one of the umbrellas outside and enjoy tea, coffee and a snack.

We've heard that Tillie's is owned by Trattoria Grasso's Restaurant (which is more prominently located along Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor). While this coffee shop does serve breakfast and lunch, seating is very limited. We've only had the coffee and tea (Green Mountain Coffee and assorted bagged teas from other vendors). For a more serious meal, we suggest going to nearby Huntington. But, if you're craving a cup-o-joe and you want some charm to go with it, Tillie's is worth the stop.

Victoria Bakery

It seems like Victoria Bakery, located in Huntington Station, is always crowded. The place is tiny, but there are tables outside that are full all of the time. After driving by the bakery numerous times, we decided to find out what all the fuss is about, and we're glad we did.

We aren't sure if the food is El Salvadorian, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban or a mix of all four. We just know it's good. At the risk of sounding like total idiots (we tried to ask questions about what we were eating, but couldn't really communicate too well in Spanish), we decided to tell you about this place anyway. We figure that food is a language everyone can understand (of course ordering might be another story, but as long as you can point or speak Spanish, you're fine).

When we walked into Victoria, we expected the place to be full of cakes, pastries and cookies. Instead, we discovered a few specialty sweets and a whole case of steaming, hot shrimp, meat and vegetables. There was also a woman grilling fresh tortillas (not the egg tortillas or the Mexican tortillas, but the thicker, smaller floury kind). The food looked delicious and the place smelled great. At that moment, the main attraction became clear. However, since it wasn't quite lunch time, we opted for the sweet stuff.

The guava cake, the pineapple pastry (which looks like an apple turnover) and the rice and coconut cake are all very good. The guava cake, filled with chunks of guava or guava jelly, is a moist, sweet and spongy, yellow cake. The pineapple turnover is light and flaky. The rice and coconut cake, which is sprinkled with sesame seeds, is the most dense of the items we ate and has the perfect sweetness. Of course, this is the first time we've tasted goodies like these, and they seemed yummy to us. We wondered, is there anywhere else to get them on Long Island?

We're looking forward to going back to try the more savory dishes soon! If you get there before we do, we'd love to hear your thoughts. For now, all we can say is that we liked what we tasted and that's why we're telling you about it.

Makinajian Farm

We've already told you about farm fresh products from Jamesport. Today we want to tell you about a farm that is a little further west (which means even those of you coming from The City can enjoy some farm fresh deliciousness without going all the way to the East End). Makinajian Farm, located off of Cuba Hill Road in Huntington, has wonderful fresh eggs, goat cheese, vegetables, fruit and poultry. They also sell locally made honey, syrup, bread and pie!

If you're concerned about where your food comes from (and let's face it, these days, we all should be), then go to Makinajian. When you arrive on this farm, you can see the chickens, ducks and other animals roaming freely on the property. The farm is also certified organic.

Sure, the items at Makinajian Farm may be a little more expensive than the average supermarket but, then again, this food is definitely above average. And, when it comes to our family's health and the health of the environment, we want the best for both. Don't you?

Sally's Cocofé in Huntington

The chocolate café trend is spreading (and we're not complaining because we love chocolate)! Maybe you've been to The Chocolate Room in Park Slope or Carroll Gardens or maybe you've been to Max Brenner in Manhattan. If so, you've probably thought it would be nice to have a place like this closer to home (that's what we thought). Now we do. And, with all the coffee houses on Long Island, it's nice to have a more interesting option and still get your caffeine fix. So, if you like chocolate (and if you don't, we're sorry, but that's just strange unless you're allergic to it, and even then, you probably still like it), try Sally's Cocofé on Main Street, in Huntington.

We haven't tasted everything, but we can say that the Mexicana Spice, which contains nutmeg, chili and a little vanilla, is DELISH! The Mexicana is the perfect mix of spice and chocolate without being overly sweet. If you are looking for a caffeine boost, also order the Cocofé Bicerin with chocolate, espresso and a little whipped cream. It may keep you awake for a week, but it's probably worth it.

The drinks are large. The Mexicana Spice is VERY generous - big enough that you might gain 50 pounds trying to finish it (sharing might be a good option here). There is a regular and large size Cocofé Bicerin.

Sally's Cocofé also sells chocolates (which aren't made on the premises, but look scrumptious) and serves light vegetarian dishes such as pizzas, soups and salads. We decided that Sally's specializes in chocolate drinks and coffee so that's what we'll be ordering there. We can't wait to try the rest of the menu items!

Nisen Sushi

Serious sushi-lovers will want to know that the dishes at Nisen Sushi in Woodbury contain the highest quality fish we've tasted at any sushi restaurant (so far) on Long Island. You can argue that there are other good places (and we know you will), but before you do, just do us a favor and go to Nisen. We're not saying that there aren't decent sushi restaurants on Long Island, we're just saying that the sushi and sashimi at Nisen is a cut above the rest. Before we go on, it's also important to note that there are two Nisen locations (one in Woodbury and and one in Commack). Both restaurants are good but this post focuses on the Woodbury location, which has a more varied and creative menu.

For those of you who have sushi-snob friends visiting from the big bad city, take them to Nisen Sushi (okay it's in a Woodbury strip mall, but once you're inside you won't know the difference). With its trendy atmosphere, DJ and lounge area, this restaurant has a New York City feel and menu. Perhaps this is why Sushi Chef, Osan Wang, who came from Megu in Manhattan, is at home here. And, while we're talking about the chef, you should definitely try one of the Chef's Selections, or Omakase, if you can. These plates are not only works of art, but the fish is melt-in-your mouth delicious.

For those of you who prefer your food cooked, the black cod (another clue that the restaurant is a bit trendy) is as good as it is at Nobu in NYC. We'd also recommend the vegetarian tasting plate (with no added salt). It's delicious.

Prices range from $25-$100 dollars per plate. The restarurant also has a fairly extensive sake menu.

Georgio's Coffee

Did you know that we have our very own coffee roaster on Long Island? Until we came across Georgio's Coffee, neither did we. Located at 146 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, this fine find is very easy to miss if you don't know it's there (and, if you like coffee, it would really be a shame to miss it).

Owned by Georgio and Lydia (a husband and wife team), this unassuming shop carries a wide variety of fair trade, organic and farm direct coffees that come from Columbia, Ethiopia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, Yemen, Peru and many other places around the world, including the Galapagos Islands. (Yes, that's right - the Coffee is grown on the Galapagos Islands.) Some tea, which is blended by Lydia, is also sold at Georgio's.

Lydia and Georgio are very knowledgeable about coffee and seem to have very good relationships with the farmers growing the beans sold at their shop. Pictures of the farms hang on the walls of the store and Georgio and Lydia can tell you about how the coffee is grown, picked and roasted. There are even samples of the coffee at various stages around the shop.

Georgio's has a few small tables so you can definitely hang around and drink a cup of coffee there but, by the time you're done drinking, you'll want to take home a bag. The place smells delicious and the coffee tastes wonderful. The only thing bad about Georgio's is that you'll be addicted on your first visit!

A Night at the Casino

Friends of the ocean, we know you've been fishing for ways to help support The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation in its mission to rescue and rehabilitate stranded seals, sea turtles, dolphins, porpoises and whales ever since we told you about them in April (and for those of you who just like to gamble, here's your chance to feed the habit).

Next Friday, August 1st, at 7pm, The Riverhead Foundation is hosting its annual Casino Night fundraiser at Atlantis Marine World Aquarium. Beautiful Wreck

If you like to eat in diners with character, Tim's Shipwreck Diner is definitely worth a visit (probably more for the atmosphere than the food, but that doesn't stop us from going back again and again). Known as the Northport Diner in the 1920s (after being relocated to Long Island from Massachusetts), the place (now over 100 years old) was renamed Otto's Shipwreck Diner sometime in the 1970s. Several years ago, it became known as Tim's Shipwreck Diner (when Otto retired and passed on the business to his son).

Running the joint out of an old fashioned dining car, Tim maintains a tight ship. Though there is a huge menu of options for your dining pleasure, we like the pancakes, egg sandwiches or blintzes for breakfast and the egg salad sandwich, fish-n-chips or turkey sandwiches for lunch. The best treat at Tim's is the homemade cornbread and jam (it's surprisingly yummy),which is brought to your table with breakfast (when available).

If you'll be going to Tim's on a weekend, get there early. The breakfast crowds are already lining up out the door by 10:00 am. Once seated, be sure to order with caution. Tim doesn't like picky eaters and most likely won't customize your order. Like we said, Tim runs a tight ship and you don't want to find yourself overboard!

Wining and Dining

We've written about Northport before, but today we want to tell you about a new wine shop and tasting room there called Northport Tasting Room and Wine Cellar (NTR). Aside from having a very interesting and good selection of wines from Austria, Africa, Greece, Israel and elsewhere around the world, the staff is attentive and knowledgeable and the overall concept of this shop/tasting room is quite original.

Focused on selling and serving wines from unusual locations, the folks at NTR have literally made the store the heart of the space. Surrounded by glass windows, the shop becomes the center of the building. As guests sit at the bar or at tables to taste wine or enjoy it by the glass, they can look into the shop to view the bottles for sale.

Since you might not have sampled many wines from the regions featured at NTR, attending a weekday tasting could be fun and educational. Otherwise, come on a Friday or Saturday and order a couple of glasses to have with a meal - we're sure you'll find a wine to take home.

Eating and drinking at NTR is a luxury we debated keeping all to ourselves (we're telling you, these guys are very smart). At NTR, not only can you enjoy delicious wines, but you can also order dinner from almost any restaurant in Northport Village, including Maroni! That's right - go to NTR on a Friday or Saturday night, order a great bottle of wine and enjoy your favorite entree from Maroni, or another restaurant in Northport, and have it delivered directly to your table.

Now, that's what we call wining and dining! We just hope that it takes a few years before the locals figure it all out.

Old Secret in Kings Park

What may be an old secret to some (and you can tell by looking at many of the folks here that they've kept it for a long time), is very new to us! This place is real gem, and it's also a little tricky to find so pay attention.

Located in Kings Park, there is an area along the Nissequogue River that will make you feel like you've been transported to a small resort beach. The water is clean and the terrain is diverse. Rocky with patches of grass in some spots and sandy with clear blue water in others, the river is the perfect place for explorers, swimmers, fishermen, sun lovers, boaters or kayakers (although you'll have to launch your kayak from the nearby ramp at Nissequogue River State Park if you're not from the Town of Smithtown). There is a town parking lot immediately upon entering the beach. There is also state parking a little further up the hill (you'll see it on your left when you enter the beach parking area). If you are not a resident, you can park your car there.

To get to this spot, take 25A east. Pass the entrance to Sunken Meadow on your right and keep going. Turn left at Old Dock Road until it ends.

When you arrive at the end of Old Dock Road, you'll see Short Beach across the River and the charming Old Dock Inn to your right. Here you can enjoy lunch, dinner or drinks while sitting inside, in front of one of the picture windows that highlight the beautiful view.

The luncheon specials at Old Dock Inn are reasonably priced (ranging from $10.95 for a very large seafood stuffed Portabella Mushroom appetizer to $16.95 for a Cold Lobster Plate). The selections on the menu mainly contain seafood, but there are also burgers if you're not big on fish. The food is okay, but spending the day by the river is definitely the main reason to come here, and when you do, we're sure you'll discover why this is one of the best kept secrets on Long Island.

Pure Pizza

If you're a pizza purist then go to Little Vincent's in Huntington. The place is small and crowded, and the lights are annoyingly bright (you might need sunglasses), but you won't care once you eat the pizza. Thin and crisp, with the perfect amount of sauce, the cheese pizza at Little Vincent's is the best on Long Island. Anyone who says otherwise is LYING! Almost every time you go to Little Vincent's, you'll hear someone say out loud how much they love the place.

Ate already? That's okay because Little Vincent's is open until 2:00 am every day except Friday, when it closes at 4:00am! Stop here on your way home from work, after a long day in NYC or after a night out in Huntington. Whether you're eating the pie sober or sauced, this pizza wins the cheese pie prize.

Long Island Daycation

With high gas prices and limited time, daycations seem to be all the rage these days. If you're planning one, we've got a suggestion. Start your day in Centerport with lunch at the Mill Pond House, which is located just off of Route 25A. Call in advance to make a reservation to sit outside, overlooking the pond. All of the outdoor seating (and even the indoor window seating) is lovely, but there is a spot that we think is the best in the house. A small deck area, with about two tables, is located on the second floor. If you can get a seat there, you'll feel like you have the restaurant, and the view, all to yourself. Since the larger table seats at least four, and the smaller seats two, you'll most likely need to have the appropriate number of people in your party to reserve one, or both, spots. If not, you'll still have a great time eating on the patio downstairs or having a drink at the tiki bar.

For lunch we recommend ordering off the Lunch Menu (although you can also order from the Sushi or Raw Bar menu). When you order from the Lunch Menu, you'll get a complete meal for $18.95. The Crabcake Sandwich is good (we prefer it without the bread, which is a bit larger than the cake) and the Apple Crumb dessert with ice cream is a nice way to end the meal.

Don't worry about being rushed. The staff gives you plenty of time to sit, eat a leisurely meal and enjoy the view. While the food isn't bad, it's the view you'll enjoy most.

Speaking of views, the area is filled with interesting little beaches and sites. When you've relaxed enough at the Mill Pond, we suggest you explore by taking a ride to one of the local beaches in Asharoken. Take Asharoken Avenue until it turns into Eaton's Neck Road, then follow the signs near the end of the road for the beach. This is one of our favorite beaches because it is somewhat secluded and there is ample parking. For non-residents, the parking fee is $15.00.

When you're ready to leave the beach, exit to your right, make another quick right into the cul-de-sac. Look for the interesting sculptures on the beach.

When you've completed your tour (because unfortunately all good vacations must come to an end), follow the cul-de-sac out to Eaton's Neck Road and back to Asharoken Avenue. You will eventually find your way back to 25A where you can head east or west to get back home.

Valencia Tavern

The only thing that might remind you of Spain at Valencia Tavern (and it's a stretch) is the large sculpture of a bull chained to the ground out front. Other than that, the outside of this bar is pretty unremarkable, and that's probably the way the patrons and owner would like to keep it. If you're looking for a trendy place to show you your face, go somewhere else. Valencia Tavern is the real deal. That's why we like it.

You can only grasp the full charm of this truly local meeting place by going inside (don't be afraid). Black and white pictures of an old Huntington hang on the walls. Above the bar there are signs that say things like "shoes and shirts required, bras and panties optional" and "time flies when you're having rum."

To keep you busy while you drink, there's a pool and shuffle puck table (and you better know how to play). In a little room with a fireplace, there's also a dart board with numerous trophies (there are obviously some champion players at Valencia - who knew?), and a Galaga and Ms. PacMan video game (how 1980's).

The staff is funny and friendly and the customers range from bikers to middle-aged local residents to young patrons. With all the wanna-be trendy spots turning up in the area, it's nice to know that a place like Valencia Tavern exists. If you like hanging out with the locals and good friends, good drinks and a good time are your main priorities, then this is the place for you.

Cold Spring Harbor

There's definitely too much to say about Cold Spring Harbor in a single blog post, but we'll do our best to give you an overview. Having mainly been a port town (well, hamlet really) in the mid-nineteenth century, Cold Spring Harbor became a tourist location after the whaling economy began to dwindle around 1860. Located on Long Island's North Shore, Cold Spring Harbor was originally named for the natural spring that still flows there. And, if you like to hit the bottle (the water bottle that is), you can fill your empties with the stuff. We can't promise any fountain of youth or anything (honestly we really don't even know for sure if the water is clean), but c'mon, a natural spring right here on Long Island, that's cool, don't you think?

We've also heard that, at one time, Cold Spring Harbor had several hotels. Today it seems the Swan View Manor Bed & Breakfast Inn is the only one. The size and style of each room varies - we've had a tour. If you will be staying here, you should visit first. Since the hotel is convenient to Northport, Huntington and Laurel Hollow, it could be a good place to book for guests attending a local wedding in these nearby towns.

More recently, Cold Spring Harbor has become known because of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory - the place where THE noble laureate JAMES WATSON was director! If you're unfamiliar with Cold Spring Harbor Labs, we suggest you check out their website and visit them for a tour. The details may be found at their site.

Cold Spring Harbor is also home to the Dolan DNA Learning Center, the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum and the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium so there are some big lessons to be learned in this tiny little town! But, if you're too cool for school, you may choose to hike, dine or shop instead.

You can take a hike in Cold Spring Harbor State Park. The entrance, with its steep, hilly steps, is reminiscent of the Dipsea Trail in Mill Valley, California. Home to great horned owls, red-tailed hawks and other interesting birds, this park is a nice place for birders. The park is also the start of the northern trailhead of the Nassau/Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, which extends for 19.2 miles to end on the South Shore of Long Island. That's right, you can walk from the North to South Shore (you would definitely need more than a day for this)!

If you'd rather chill instead of trek, spend a few hours on Main Street where you'll find interesting shops and restaurants.

Gourmet Goddess (which also happens to be one of our favorite places in Cold Spring Harbor) is worth visiting for the decoration alone. The store sells very unique adult and kid's clothing as well as specialty sweets.

In terms of restaurants, Trattoria Grasso has a small, but nice bar and live jazz in the evenings. The oysters, drinks and desserts are good (we like them better than the meals). 105 Harbor is a little pricy, but the view of the harbor makes a seafood meal worth it if you're sitting in front of the window.

And, for those of you who live in the area (or just really love libraries), Cold Spring Harbor Library is the nicest one on Long Island (we're not fooling around). Sporting a huge reading room, a lovely fireplace and rows of windows, this library makes you feel like you're in the reading room of a Long Island Gold Coast mansion (nothing wrong with pretending). Curl up with a book and stop every so often to take in the beautiful views of the water.

House of Dosas

House of Dosas is basically heaven for any hungry vegetarian craving authentic South Indian cuisine, but the omnivores seem to like the delicious Dosas (thin rice crepes) and Uthappam (pancake made from rice and lentil flour) just as well, if not better (trust us - we've seen the eating in action). Located in Hicksville, Long Island, House of Dosas should not be missed by anyone who enjoys good Indian food.

The main reason to have a meal at House of Dosas is because it's delicious, but once you try the place, the wide selection of Dosa and Uthappam on the menu, the friendly staff and the reasonable prices (ranging from $3.50 for an appetizer to $9.95 for a meal) will have you going back for more...and more...and more.

Some of our favorites include (but are definitely not limited to) the Vada (fried lentil doughnuts), the Masala Dosa stuffed with onion and potato and the Plain Uthappam (why mess with a good thing, sometimes it's nice to keep it simple). These are served with Sambar and Coconut Chutney, which add a nice kick.

We also like the Mixed Vegetable Uthappam with onion, chili, coriander and peas. And, for those of you who like it hot (and yeah, that would be very), get the Gunpowder Masala Dosa, which is spread with spicy chutney.

What more can we say? Dosas are damn good!

Community Supported Awesomeness is what we like to call Golden Earthworm Farm's Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA). With twelve years of farming and seven seasons of CSA, this certified organic Long Island farm is expanding to get as many fresh produce to the locals as possible, and we couldn't be happier about that! Through Golden Earthworm's CSA program, we receive a box of luscious vegetables every week for 26 weeks and, with every batch, it just gets better and better!

Protected by a North Fork land preservation program, Golden Earthworm Farm rests on two pieces of beautiful land in Jamesport that you can feel good about. The eighty acres currently in production are farmed organically so the goodness spreads from the farm, to the food and through the community.

To say we've been satisfied with the program (which is now in it's third week of the summer share season) is an understatement. So far from Earthworm we've tasted delicious Red Radishes, Baby and Bunched Arugula, Boston Lettuce, Spinach, Rhubarb, Swiss Chard, Toscano Kale, Romaine Lettuce, Green Crisp Lettuce, Cilantro, Broccoli, Kohlrabi, Sugar Snap Peas, Garlic Scapes and Strawberries. If vegetables could talk, the ones from Golden Earthworm would jump out of the box telling tales of the good life on Long Island's North Fork - they have that spa glow that can only come from spending the perfect amount of time soaking up the sun and getting pampered and hydrated! Of course they taste as good as they look - Mmmmmm!

While the 2008 CSA program is full for this season (sorry folks), you should prepare to partake next year by tasting Golden Earthworm's grand greens from their farmstand in Jamesport or at the Saturday farmer's market in Huntington, Islip or Port Washington.

For those of you coming out to the East End for the summer, the ride home from Jamesport provides the perfect opportunity to grab some vegetables to bring back with you to the city.

For others who live in Queens, learn more about the farmer's markets and CSA programs in your area.

Thaid Up

Listen up Long Islanders (we know it's hard, but this is important)! For what is arguably the best Thai food outside of Queens (that would be Long Island City's Tuk Tuk), head to Sarin Thai Cuisine restaurant in Greenvale. Every time we go here (and we go often) the food is FAB!

Whether you like meat or fish, chicken or veggies, there's a Thai dish at Sarin for you.

Some of our favorites include the Papaya Salad (sweet and spicy), Crispy Snapper special (melt-in-your-mouth tasty), Gang Puck (a vegetarian's delight with or without tofu) and the Pad Thai (always good). Accent these dishes with some Sticky Rice and a refreshing Thai Iced Tea - YUM!

For all of you city folk, Sarin is also the perfect way to end the day as you drive home after a scenic Long Island ride on 25A or a stop at Martin Viette Nursery or Scarsella's.

What A Fluke!

"What a Fluke" is what you could be saying if you head to Captree State Park for a day of fishing. Located on Long Island's South Shore, at the eastern tip of Jones Beach, the park has a boat basin loaded with charter boats for cruising, fishing and partys. The boats range in size and price (depending on how long and what type of fishing or activity you'd like to do). Common catches are Fluke, Flounder, Blackfish and Sea Bass. Some boats will also take you Shark fishing!

Many visitors also come to the park to fish at the dock by the bay. This is a great activity to do with the kids, especially since you can also watch the many species of sea birds and observe the crabs crawling along the dock - there are a lot!

In the summer, the park provides guided nature walks and bird watchers come to view the various types of seagulls, terns, pelicans, black skimmers, common loon, plover and ducks. A variety of other birds (some less common in our area) have also been sighted at Captree - very exciting for birders!

If you arrive early, you can find a spot on the shore of the bay and picnic in the park for lunch. Be sure to enjoy the lovely view of the Fire Island Lighthouse in the distance and the scenic boats cruising off in the horizon.

Entrance to the park is free if you have a yearly New York State Parks Pass, which you can purchase for $59.00. We highly recommend this option, especially if you'll be taking advantage of other New York state parks! Without a pass, there is an entrance fee of $8.00.

Breaking the Waves

Escape the heat wave by cooling down at Robert Moses State Park. Swim, surf or fish in the approximately 5 miles of ocean beach, or take a nap on the soft sand while listening to the breaking waves - one of our favorite things to do!

Once you're done swimming and napping, head over to the Fire Island Lighthouse to explore a little bit of the western part of Fire Island National Seashore (yes this is one of the only parts of Fire Island you can get to without taking a ferry). Park in Field 5 at Robert Moses State Park and follow the scenic boardwalk, which will lead you directly to the lighthouse.

We're sure you'll enjoy having fun in the sun, but there's one bit of advice we suggest you take: Arrive and leave early to avoid the return traffic on the causeway. The park opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. The entrance fee is $8.00 unless you have a New York State Parks Pass ($59.00 for the year).

A Walk in the Park

Whether you like to run, bike, walk, swim, fish or golf, you can do it in Sunken Meadow State Park. Located in the town of Smithtown, on the North Shore of Long Island, this is a great place to bring the family for a nice day outdoors.

It is said that Sunken Meadow has one of the most difficult cross-country routes in the state of New York! If you are not big on running, take a walk on the park board walk or on the park's six miles of hiking trails. As you walk or run also be sure to enjoy the views of the lush trees and the Long Island Sound.

Not a walker or runner? Play a game of golf instead. Featuring 27 holes (play 9 or 18), the course rates range from $15.00 for nine holes on a weekday to $29.00 for 18 holes on the weekend.

More of a swimmer? Jump into the Long Island Sound to enjoy the park's three miles of beach.

We're sure that whatever activity you decide upon, you'll enjoy your day at Sunken Meadow.

Guggenheims on the Gold Coast

Located in Port Washington (known in The Great Gatsby as "East Egg"), Sands Point Preserve is open year round. Entrance to this 216 acre preserve, which costs $2.00 on weekends, allows access to several nature trails and the shoreline. For an additional $6.00, the tour of Falaise (named after the French town) is well worth the trip if you are interested in Long Island's Gold Coast. Built in 1923 for Harry F. Guggenheim (the nephew of Solomon R. Guggenheim) and his then-wife Caroline Morton, Falaise is, in our opinion, the highlight of this park.

The home is interesting for a variety of reasons and, for the most part, is exactly the way Harry Guggenheim left it. During the tour, you'll gain insight into the influence that the Guggenheim family had on space travel and the newspaper industry. You'll also see the room where it is said that Harry Guggenheim's friend, Charles Lindbergh, completed his first book, We.

The tour guide will also point out some very interesting architectural elements on this French Medieval style house. Outside, these elements include the lava stone columns and smeared brick construction. Inside, you'll see antiques such as art by known artists and their schools as well as wood carvings, 1920's and 1950's furniture and clothing which was worn by Harry Guggenheim. Harry's horse racing trophys and memorabilia may be of particular interest to racing fans as well.

Open May through October, Falaise can be toured Thursdays through Sundays at noon, 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm (with exceptions during the Medieval Festival in September when there are several days that no tours are permitted).

Rise Above It

This place gives new meaning to the term "upper crust!" We love the whole wheat bread (you can see the grains)! Oh, and the chocolate-chip scones are DELISH! Really, though, there's no going wrong no matter what you order at A-Rise-Above Bake Shop in Huntington. You'll enjoy every bit of the freshly baked cakes, cookies and muffins. Of course, you can also get a great coffee to go with your treats. Don't take our word for it, taste for yourselves.

Fun for the Whole Family

For a full day of fun for the whole family, head to Main Street in Riverhead. Make Atlantis Marine World your first stop. There's a reason that Parents Magazine ranks this place among the top-ten best aquariums for kids! Your child (and you) will pet stingrays, observe sharks, watch seahorses, view the Western hemisphere's largest all-living closed-system coral reef display and enjoy daily special events such as sea lion shows and penguin feeds. From shark dives to aquatic adventure cruises on the Peconic, there's an activity for every child (big and small) at Atlantis.

When you're done seeing all there is to see at the aquarium, head over to East End Arts Council. For anyone interested in the arts on Long Island, this is definitely one of Riverhead's hidden treasures. Founded in 1972, the East End Arts Council is home to a wonderful art gallery and gift shop, and operates the area's only Community School of the Arts. The Council also runs a summer art camp for children ages five through twelve. With shows that rotate every four to six weeks, there is a reason to come back often to view the exhibitions displaying works by well-known and emerging artists.

After you've completed your tour of the art gallery, head a little further down Main Street to the Eastenders Coffee House. It's worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood for the day. Check out the fun an funky atmosphere and grab a coffee and a snack for the ride home. If you live in the area, Eastenders also has live performances. Shows happen on Saturday and Sunday afternoons as well as on Friday and Saturday nights from 8-11pm.

Row Your Boat

If you like to kayak, there are many great kayaking spots on Long Island. Depending upon the route (and your mood), the trip can be a couple of hours or an entire day. Today we're going to tell you about an approximately two-hour scenic trip. Keep in mind it could be longer if the current is strong or you can't resist stopping at a secluded beach area to enjoy the wildlife, lay out in the sun or swim.

Begin at Gold Star Battalion Beach in Huntington. If you haven't got a green pass or town sticker, you'll need to pay. Goldstar is a great starting point because there is plenty of room to unload the kayak and park the car in the fairly large lot.

Once in the water, paddle north, toward the channel. Take a quick break at the mouth of the channel to check out the ruins of the old lighthouse (you'll also see the newer lighthouse across the harbor). Staying on the west side of the shore, continue north and pass the interesting homes along the way. Also be sure to look for the osprey nest at the top of the channel marker. If you're there on the right day, you also may see a World War II plane flying overhead. In the water, check out the horseshoe crabs, waterfowl and jellyfish. The scenery is beautiful and can be distracting so also be mindful of the rocks on this side of the channel. They're fairly obvious, especially when the tide is low, but it's important to be aware of them, particularly if the current is strong.

Head past the rocks to approach the more open water of the Long Island Sound. While staying along the west side of the shore, continue north and eventually come to Target Rock's half-mile rocky beach. Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge is an 80-acre park containing several ponds and an oak-hickory forest. A variety of songbirds, ducks, fish, reptiles and mammals call this area home. The piping plover forages here and an occasional harbor seal may be seen at the right time of year (between January and the end of April).

When you're ready to head back to Goldstar Battalion Beach, you may decide to paddle around the renovated Huntington Lighthouse before heading into the channel. If you're too tired, you can always come back again. Boat tours of the lighthouse are provided by the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, the non-profit group that restored the lighthouse.

Possibly dating as far back as ancient Polynesia, Stand Up Paddle Surfing or SUP, was documented in the 1940's and became popular in the 1960's when the Beach Boys stood on their longboards and used outrigger paddles to paddle out and take photos of tourists learning to surf. Several years ago, Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, Brian Keaulana, Archie Kalepa and other surfers from Hawaii began to use SUP to train when the surf was down. SUP can be done on any large body of water, with small or large waves. That means that there are some great Paddle Surfing opportunities right here on Long Island!

Serious SUPs like Paddle Surfing because they catch waves earlier, get to waves easier and find surf that is rarely ridden. Paddle Surfing on large waves can also make for longer rides because you can stroke through certain sections of the wave. While on the wave, the paddle can also be used to help engineer cool turns.

In areas where there are few or no waves, the sport is a little like kayaking, but it also provides a serious full-body workout where balance is key. In fact, Paddle Surfing is growing in popularity among celebrities because it is a great way to cross-train and improve core strength.

A board and paddle can run around $1,000 to $1,500. The Board Shop in Huntington recently had a SUP day in Cold Spring Harbor so beginners could test their Paddle Surfing skills. To learn more about boards available in the area call The Board Shop at 631-424-7873.

Milling Around in Stony Brook

Located in beautiful Stony Brook, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Grist Mill is the perfect place to spend the day with family or friends. Having functioned as a community center in the 19th century, and used into the 1940's by farmers, the mill was a place where people would meet and share news while they waited for the miller to grind their grain. In 1947, Ward Melville owned the mill and later deeded it to the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, which oversees the area today. The mill is open to the public from April through December and tours are conducted on the weekends.

Directly across the street from the mill is the pond. Many ducks and swans nest in Mill Pond and children love to watch them swim. At the right time of year, ducks can also be seen with their newborns.

The path around the eleven-mile pond provides several peaceful resting spots and is a great place to take a leisurely walk to enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

When you're done with your walk and you've worked up an appetite, you can choose to eat at one of the area's many restaurants or head down the road to the historic Three Village Inn. This historic inn has twenty-six rooms and serves lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Contact the hotel to make reservation at 631-751-0555.

With wonderful views of the water, the Three Village Inn is also a nice place to plan a romantic weekend getaway. You may decide to walk around the town, fly fish on your own, or take a boat ride around the 88 acre wetland area while listening to a naturalist from Stony Brook University discuss the wildlife you'll see. No matter what you decide to do, Grist Mill and the surrounding area is a great place to be.

It's time for another weekend break from the big NYC and we all know you need it bad this week! Work was so stressful you don't even feel like going to the Hamptons. Guess what - you don't have to! How about trying something a little bit different for a change? Here's an idea - Port Jefferson.

Located on Long Island's North Shore and named after Thomas Jefferson, this village was once a small ship building community and whaling port. Easy to get to by train (the LIRR stops at Port Jefferson Station and you can catch a taxi to town) or car (if you're finally taking that scenic ride along 25A East), Port Jefferson today is a unique place with interesting shops, a variety of restaurants and a lively harbor.

Have a drink on the outdoor dock at Danford's Hotel and Marina, enjoy the waterfront and watch the ferry to Bridgeport, Connecticut come and go. If you don't feel like heading home the same day, plan ahead to stay at Danford's for the night. Be sure to reserve in advance - it's a popular place for events such as weddings.

Given it's proximity to the water, Port Jefferson has many seafood restaurants with outdoor seating, but there are also a variety of other menus including the one at Tiger Lily, which happens to have some great vegetarian food. Vegetarians (including vegans) - trust us - this is definitely a happy place for you!

Don't let the fun and funky atmosphere at Tiger Lily fool you (although we definitely like it that way), the food here is seriously good. The Falafel with the Works is a definite fave, and a deal at $7.95. Also try one of the many salads, soups, juices and smoothies. Relax non-vegetarians, there's plenty of food for you here too!

Oh, and don't forget to keep your eye on Tiger Lily for the opening of their outdoor lounge/coffee house every Friday and Saturday night between 7 and 10pm.

There's a reason that Bon Bons Chocolatier is overflowing with customers on many weekends and most holidays. The handmade chocolates at Bon Bons are a delight to the eyes and the taste buds.

In 1979, Bon Bons opened as one of Trahan's Chocolate Shop's East Coast franchise stores. After several years, the store became independent of the franchise and was renamed Bon Bons Chocolatier. Chocolate production was, and still is, done on the premises.

In 1984, the original owners sold the store (first located at 338 New York Avenue) to Mary Alice Meinersman and her husband. The shop, now at 319 Main Street, is home to a beautiful glass-enclosed kitchen, with a molding and wrapping room, and hand-dipping station, that allows customers to see where and how the chocolate is made.

With past performances from musicians such as Billy Bragg, Ani DiFranco, Wilco, David Sanborn, The Manhattan Transfer and so many more to upcoming shows from Suzanne Vega, Maxi Priest, Angelique Kidjo, Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons, it's no wonder that the Inter-Media Arts Center (IMAC), attracts audiences from all over. Located in Huntington, IMAC is arguably Long Island's most diverse and interesting performance venue.

From the time it opened, in 1974, IMAC has been a cutting edge organization. This theater made history as the first non-profit media arts center on Long Island. Originally focused on making video production services available to artists and producers, IMAC functioned out of a large house on six acres of land in Huntington. It is responsible for helping to facilitate and support the media arts movement of the mid-seventies and IMAC was one of the 13 original Media Art Centers in New York State to assist with expanding the video movement.

In 1976, IMAC moved from Huntington to Bayville, where a sophisticated video production studio was developed. It contained editing facilities, an art gallery and a small multi-purpose theater for film, dance and music. IMAC also provided a full line of television production services with multiple camera studio production, video editing and animation workshops. More importantly, for the large audiences they would soon attract, IMAC started their live performance program!

Eventually, by 1983, IMAC moved back to Huntington into what had originally been a 1920's Vaudville theater. In the winter of 1983, with little time to waste, the organization met their self-imposed six-week goal to get the theater up and running again. Their determination resulted in the opening of a five part, critically acclaimed dance series. The rest is history.

Jedediah Hawkins Inn

Located in Jamesport, Long Island, the Jedediah Hawkins Inn is not to be missed. Built in 1863, the house was originally done in the Italinate style and was likely one of the most elaborate homes on the East End. It became vacant in the later part of the twentieth-century and remained empty until the 1980's. Set to be demolished in 2004, the house survived because of a partnership that developed to preserve and restore it. As a result, the structure was transformed into the wonderful Victorian inn it is today.

The Inn is grand, yet extremely inviting. Visitors are immediately transformed by the peace and serenity of the grounds, the lovely staff and the welcoming, cozy interior. After seeing the inside, it's easy to understand why this was the 2005 North Fork Designer Showhouse.

Upon entering the front door, guests are tempted to sit in the comfortable and bright entry room, where they might order a cup of tea or coffee and relax or read. For more than a snack, the Inn serves meals in a larger dining area.

As Jamesport also happens to be home to many wonderful wineries, the Inn has a 2500-bottle wine cellar, which contains a sample from every wine producer on Long Island, including Jedediah's own label. Also known as "The Captain's Cellar," we think this room is one of the best in the house. If the hearth-like fireplace, soft, comfortable sofas, stone walls and rustic decor aren't enough to make you stay here all day, we're sure a few glasses of nice wine will.

If you enjoy wine as much as we do, you also might want to participate in the Inn's series of Thursday Night Casual Wine Dinners, which began on May 8, 2008.

If you will be in Jamesport for a few days, also plan to stay in one of Jedediah's luxurious, designer-decorated rooms. Each room is unique and practically perfect, with a view of the lawn, garden, farm or pond. The Belvedere Suite is our favorite, and a great choice if you're looking for a wedding suite or a room for any special occasion. Be sure to plan ahead though - there are only six rooms! There is a two-night minimum stay on weekends and a three-night minimum stay on holidays. This is a great place to be no matter what the season, and rates change depending on the time of year. Next time you're headed to Long Island's East End, and you're driving on Route 24, drive by the big duck. Located in Flanders, this bird is famous. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and featured in the book Roadside Giants, the duck is worth a visit, especially for the children!

The store inside the duck sells Long Island souvenirs including postcards, books and other items. The structure has even influenced the field of architecture. Because of The Big Duck, any building shaped like the product it sells, is referred to as a "duck."

With the goal of selling more of their Peking ducks, Riverhead resident and farmer Martin Mauer and his wife, Jeule, built the giant duck in 1931. Originally known as The Big Duck Ranch because duck farms were referred to as "duck ranches" in the 1930's, the duck rested at The Big Duck Ranch on West Main Street until 1936. It was later relocated (when the owners moved) to Route 24 in Flanders.

In 1987, when development was to take place on the land where the duck rested (or should we say nested), the community came together to save it. Kia and Puran Eshghi, the owners at that time, donated the the landmark to Suffolk County in December of 1987. It was eventually placed in Sears Bellows County Park. Approximately seven months ago, the duck was moved back to it's former home on Route 24 to roost in peace (we hope).

Daytrippin in Caumsett State Park

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and located on Long Island's North Shore, in the village of Lloyd Harbor, Caumsett (meaning "place of sharp rock,") is the perfect daytrip destination. With over 1,700 acres, there are plenty of places to hike, bike, relax or reflect. The problem - with only 12 hours in the day, it's difficult to do everything!

Before giving you some ideas, we're providing some background. This is for the history buffs (and you know who you are).

In 1654, 3,000 acres of present-day Lloyd Harbor was sold to English settlers by the Matinecock Indians. In 1676, James Lloyd purchased the land. His son farmed there and built a home that still stands today. Then, Lloyd's grandson eventually erected the Joseph Lloyd Manor house, where he remained until he was forced away by the British during the Revolutionary War. The last of the Lloyds to own the estate, around 1841, was Henry Lloyd IV.

By the 1880's visitors from New York City arrived in Lloyd Harbor by steamboat. In the 1900's wealthy families began building their Gold Coast estates. In 1921, 1,750 acres of land was purchased by Marshall Field III. He built the estate he named "Caumsett." The park was aquired by New York State in 1961.

In the twenty-first century, visitors (that includes you), can come to the park to cross-country ski in winter, scuba dive and fish (with a permit) in summer, view rehabilitated wildlife at the rescue center, or bike, walk and hike anytime. Choose to remain on the park's main, paived road or venture on to one of the many off-road trails.

Also look for the Willow Tree Farm Equestrian Center, which provides lessons and boarding at the polo pony barn. For further information about this, you can call 631-423-1770.

For all of you planners, there is also a calendar of organized events. Some of these include wilderness survival classes, evening hikes to search for owls, fox and deer and the Caumsett Cultural Arts Festival.

If you come for the day, you can bring your lunch and eat on the green or at the beach. After leaving the park, stop in neighboring Huntington Village or Cold Spring Harbor for a bite to eat at one of the many top-notch restaurants.

Heckscher Park in Huntington

Located in Huntington Village, Heckscher Park is particularly beautiful this time of year because of the many colorful tulips scattered throughout the grounds. To celebrate the beauty of these flowers each spring, the town of Huntington organizes a Tulip Festival with activities for adults and children of all ages. Today marked the eighth festival of this kind at Heckscher Park. If you missed this year's festival, don't worry, there's still plenty of time to tip-toe through the tulips on your own while enjoying the other wonderful parts of the park.

Park in the lot next to the museum, or along Madison Street, then start your journey by taking a stroll around the pond. Once you've completed your walk, visit the recently erected September 11 Memorial, located in front of The Heckscher Museum of Art. This memorial was dedicated on September 11, 2006 to remember the Huntingtonians who lost their lives on that day in 2001.

After viewing the Memorial, stop into The Heckscher Museum of Art to see the current exhibit entitled, To Infinity and Beyond: Mathematics in Contemporary Art, which runs through June 22, 2008. While you're at the Museum, also check out the other works on display from the permanent collection.

If you aren't much of a museum buff, come back to the park starting in June to enjoy the free evening concerts and shows organized by the Huntington Arts Council, and performed on the Chapin Rainbow Stage. For the best Korean grocer this side of Queens, head to H&Y Market in Hicksville, Long Island. You'll find fresh produce and fish as well as a huge selection of Asian delights (not just Korean), ranging from the essential to the unusual.

With a whole section dedicated to kimchi, you'll want to try it all. And, for those of you who thought there were only two kinds of rice - brown and white - think again. H&Y has the best selection we've seen in any East Coast Asian market so far.

If you're searching for chopsticks, rice paddles, teapots or rice cookers, you can find them at H&Y as well.

To satisfy your sweet tooth, head next door to the attached Canaan Bread Bakery and Café. We like the Anpan, but choose from a variety of Asian delights including mochi, man-joo or walnut cookies. While you're there, we'd also suggest buying a loaf of Asian-style white bread to toast for breakfast.

If you're not into cooking, but you just feel like having Korean food, go to Koreana. This is the restaurant located on the opposite side of the building from the bakery (also attached to the market). Koreana's specialty is the Chicken BonChon, but we've had several other delicious dishes including the DolSot and Chicken BibimBap. We'd recommend both. If you're in the mood for Galbi, Koreana also serves this dish made with short ribs.

Lunch specials are served Monday through Friday, from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Prices for lunch range from $7.00 to $10.00. The dinner menu has a wider variety of dishes and prices range from $9.00 to $40.00 per plate, with more items in the lower price range. So, for a hearty Korean meal that won't break the bank, head to Koreana.

Cinema Arts Centre

Move over Angelika, here comes Cinema Arts!

Located in Huntington, Long Island, Cinema Arts Centre is the place on Long Island to see independent films. If you don't believe us, just take a look at this A-list of upcoming special events including an evening with David Lynch and a visit from animator, Bill Plympton.

For those of you who may need an education, that would be the David Lynch who created the films, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead. Do we need to go on? Then there's Bill Plympton, the two-time Academy Award nominated animator who premiered his film Idiots and Angels at this year's Tribeca Film Festival (you may have heard of it), on April 26th.

When you go to watch your favorite flick, also check out the Sky Room Café for a quick snack and the outdoor garden area to see the interesting sculptures.

Spawning Bunker

The bunker fish are out in droves in the waters of Long Island! Hundreds, maybe thousands of bunker fish could be seen today in and around the Great Peconic Bay.

At times it seemed like you could walk on water there were so many fish. We're no fishing experts, but apparently, when the bunker are out, striped bass and bluefish are usually not far behind (or should we say below). Bass and bluefish may travel below the bunker and feed when they get hungry. So, if you think something fishy is going on, think again. The bunker are just having a little fun.

Sunset Beach on Shelter Island

In case you hadn't noticed, it's the end of April. Memorial Day is coming and soon the summer will be here. What should you be doing? Well, of course, planning your summer getaways! We've got one for you. Head to Sunset Beach on Shelter Island. You'll be glad you did.

Open May 16th through September, you've got four months to enjoy this little slice of heaven on Long Island. That said, choose wisely. This is a hipster spot in the height of the season and the rates (and crowds) increase for holidays as well as weekends in July and August. You can take advantage of off peak times in May, June and September in order to enjoy the quiet beauty of the island. You can also check out Sunset Beach for the day. When you do, have lunch and a drink, and enjoy the scenery.

The hotel's beach-side restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere - the kind that makes you want to enjoy another drink and keep watching the sunset. Get what we mean? There is a nice selection of food on the lunch, dinner and brunch menus. It ranges from fresh local Ceviche to New York Steak Frites for lunch and dinner to Soft Boiled Eggs, Quiche Lorraine and Buttermilk Pancakes for brunch. We know from experience that the Salade Nicoise, Seasonal Fruit Crisp du Jour and the Lillets (which you will have to ask for because Lillet isn't on the menu) are good.

To get to Shelter Island, you'll have to take a ferry from Greenport, Long Island. The ferry lines can be long so, to avoid the crowds, try to get there early during peak season.

Well, what are you waiting for? Head to the beach and enjoy the sunset!

Let’s hear it for the locals! Today we’re giving props to our favorite independent bookstore, Book Revue. Located in Huntington, Long Island, this bookstore always has a great selection of new, used and rare books as well as a star lineup of guest speakers and authors. In addition to supporting writers from Long Island, Book Revue welcomes everyone from Bill Clinton to Gene Wilder to Morimoto. While there are too many book signings to mention here, some upcoming guests include Henry Winkler (you may know him as “Fonzie”), Butch Patrick (a.k.a. Eddie Munster) and Barbara Walters. It’s a good idea to arrive early for these events – we’ve seen lines around the block! Oh, and don't forget to say "hi" to the friendly staff from the longislandette!

Strong Meatball

If asked, Michael Maroni, chef and owner of Maroni Cuisine in Northport, Long Island (or should we say "Strong Island"), would honestly be able to say "My meatball is stronger than your meatball." That's right folks! After beating Bobby Flay in a meatball showdown last year, it's official. This meatball helps put the "Strong" in "Strong Island."

Oh, but you say you're not a meatball fan? No problem because basically EVERYTHING is good at Maroni Cuisine. Fear not vegetarians, there's food for you too.

We want to make this post perfectly clear. Eat at Maroni!

Be sure to get the tasting menu. In fact, if you go on a Friday or Saturday night, you must get the tasting menu. It can run from $80 to $100 per head, but it's well worth it. You will taste all of Chef Maroni's best dishes including the kobe beef sliders, the ribs, the pasta, the eggplant parmesan, the seafood and the homemade sweets. If you want to spend slightly less (around $50.00 per head), but eat most of the same dishes, try going to Maroni for lunch instead. No matter when you go, make sure you arrive hungry because you will probably want to eat until the buttons on your pants pop open.

But wait, don't go running out the door yet. You'll need to make reservations at least 4 weeks in advance. The food is big, but the place is tiny. You can reserve your table by calling 631-757-4500 between the hours of 12pm and 4pm. Maroni is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner.

Just thinking about the utter deliciousness makes us salivate!

Kiteboarding Long Island

All you need is wind, water and gear and you can learn how to kiteboard. This sport is gaining popularity on Long Island and there are definitely places to test your skills. We hear that one of the best spots on Long Island for kiteboarding is Napeague Harbor, in Amagansett. Other locations include Heckscher State Park, on the Great South Bay and West Meadow Park, by Stony Brook. Lessons are also available. Sailor's Haven

Located along Fire Island's National Seashore, Sailor's Haven is a definite fav. Unless you want to walk across the Great South Bay, or unless you have access to a private boat, the best way to get there is by taking the Fire Island Ferry from Sayville, Long Island.

Do yourself a favor and hop on the earliest ferry so you can have the beach all to yourselves for a couple of hours. We don't want to hear any complaining from any of you sleepy heads out there. Trust us, you will thank us for this tip!

After you've spent some quality time on the Sailor's Haven Beach, head over to the Sunken Forest. Take the one and a half mile long boardwalk trail through the forest. Then head over to the snack bar to refuel. If you're really feeling adventurous, head back to the beach and walk to Cherry Grove for a bite. There are lots of places to eat there, and Cherry Grove is a fun place.

Seal Watching on Long Island

Did you know that you could see seals right here in New York's backyard? You don't have to go to California! Seals migrate to Long Island from January through April each year. If you are interested in seal watching, there are several options.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation operates seal cruises from January until the end of April. These weekend-only tours leave from Point Lookout and go through Hempstead Harbor. Additionally, the Foundation rehabilitates sick and injured seals (among other marine mammals) and releases them back into the wild. Seal releases are open to the public. Visit www.RiverheadFoundation.org if you are interested in going on a cruise or wishing a rehabilitated seal well as he or she rejoins family.

Montauk Point State Park is another place where seals congregate. The park is beautiful and has many hiking/walking trails including the "Seal Haul" trail. Guided tours of this trail are available, but you can also walk the trail on your own. Keep in mind that the seals don't know you're coming so they may not always be there. This winter and spring, seals have also been seen swimming and eating near Ponquogue Bridge. For those unfamiliar with this area, it is located at the opposite end of Dune Road from Westhampton Beach, where seals also may be seen from time to time.

Oh, and remember folks, we're talking about seals here on Long Island, not sea lions.

Planting Fields

Located in Oyster Bay, on the grounds of Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, the former Coe residence is a great example of one of Long Island's Gold Coast estates. With an amazing interior and wonderful views of the rest of the 409 acre property, it's no wonder the family chose to live here! The park is beautiful all year. In the fall, the foliage is beautiful. In spring and summer, the flowers are blooming. There are also a variety of activities happening in the park ranging from tours of the Coe Mansion to concerts in the park. Japanese Stroll Garden

The John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden, located in Locust Valley, is a real find. If you're looking for something to do on Long Island between April and October, this is a little gem. Peaceful and beautiful, this is a great place to meditate alone or stroll with friends. Just be sure to call in advance to make sure someone will be there to let you in. Sometimes it seems thatthe powers-that-be at this secret garden want to keep it a little too hush hush. The number is 516-676-4486. You can also learn more at the Locust Valley website.
